  • Comment from the judges

I enjoyed reviewing this submission and learning more about Consumer Protection BC’s people-focused approach to public service. The organization clearly demonstrates a strong connection between its purpose of protecting consumers and the daily work of employees. With a relatively small team, the clear line of sight between individual roles and community impact appears to create a strong sense of meaning and shared accountability across the organization. One element that stood out in particular was the employee-developed values of curiosity, integrity and impact. The fact that employees were directly involved in shaping these values through a staff-led process is a notable strength and reflects a culture that is built with employees rather than simply communicated to them.

  • Comment from the judges

The example of the CEO’s relational leadership style and the strong levels of trust reflected in engagement results suggest that leadership has created an environment where employees feel comfortable asking questions and contributing ideas. The diverse representation on the board of directors is also a positive signal, reinforcing the organization’s commitment to inclusive leadership at the governance level. Inclusion and belonging are also embedded through inclusive hiring practices, cultural safety training, and leadership behaviours that encourage diverse perspectives and psychological safety.
