Indigenous Australians have inhabited the Sydney region for at least 3o,ooo years and was home to 29 Aboriginal Clans who make up the Eora Nation when Captain James Cook (then Lieutenant) sailed into Sydney Harbour for the first time in 1770.
Western settlement began in 1788 when Captain Arthur Phillip sailed the First Fleet of convicts into what is now known as Sydney Harbour.
From our penal colony roots, Sydney has grown into a diverse and thriving city of over 5 million people.
Sydney is known for not one – but three of the world’s most iconic landmarks; the Sydney Opera House, the Sydney Harbour Bridge (renown for our exceptional New Year’s Eve fireworks display) and Bondi Beach, a surfers favourite.
Modern day Sydneysiders love the outdoors, have a friendly, laid back attitude (“she’ll be right, mate”), are diverse, forward-looking and innovative.
