For today’s talk from our 6-week-long Summer Series: 25 minute daily talks all throughout June, we had a session with Jacqui Hitt, Covid-19 Communication and Engagement Lead, Anglo American.

Moving a mountain

Exploring just what it takes for a global mining company to mount a rapid and holistic engagement response to Covid-19.

WeCare is Anglo American’s global lives and livelihoods programme that responds to the varying effects of Covid-19. With the company’s Values at its heart, it is responsible for helping keep over 95,000 employees and the residents of local mine communities informed, protected and cared for throughout the pandemic. Central to the programme is the need to continually engage and educate stakeholders on what they can do to protect themselves and those they care about. The fact that the company also provides health care services direct to many of its employees and their dependants, creates added pressure and complexity. Watch this video to get a glimpse at what it means for a company to truly live its Values in a time of crisis, the challenges this presents, and the vital role effective engagement plays.

Jacqui spoke about:

  • Protecting their workforce and host communities
  • The Anglo American Covid-19 challenges
  • How Anglo American use their values to shape the pillars for the WeCare Response:
    • Physical Health
    • Mental Health
    • Living with Dignity
    • Community Response
  • Key insights and learnings
  • What Anglo American would do differently if they were to repeat the project
  • and more
