In my work with leaders, especially during the Covid 19 pandemic, I have noticed a fixation on the mechanics and metrics of business. (“I want our staff to strengthen their communications skills”, “We need to train our staff to embrace virtual working”.

But this is not what we need at this time. Our employees know what to do, and they don’t need us to tell them. They need something quite different from leaders—something that is not always about the needs of the leader and the organization’s metrics. They need compassion, empathy, support, encouragement and love. Yes, that last word is crucial if we want to inspire our employees. And they need to understand the connection between what they do and their contribution to improving the world.

They want something much bigger than engagement—they want to be inspired. Without this connection, it’s just a job.
